![]() For instance, in Tomb Raider games it isn’t always obvious which objects can be interacted with and which are just part of the scenery, you’d think after eight games this would have been addressed. New abilities such as abseiling, free-climbing and beam-balancing have been well integrated into the mix but the gameplay suffers the same defects as it predecessors. Lara’s acrobatics have always been one of the franchise’s biggest selling points, and with a few extra moves added to her repertoire, this won’t feel too familiar to series veterans. If previous Tomb Raider titles have taught us one thing, it’s that such perilous terrain is best crossed through the use of gymnastics. As always, the emphasis is on exploration and there are plenty of exotic locations to whet the appetites of hardened adventurers, from underwater ruins to Asian jungles. In this respect Underworld clings heavily to tradition, remaining true to its predecessors. The training stage pretty much sets the precedent for the rest of the game: get from point A to point B through trail and error. Talk about a baptism of fire! Once you’ve mastered your basic moves, a cut scene takes you back two weeks and we find our heroine on a quest to locate her missing mother, which has her searching ancient ruins on the ocean floor and entangling herself in Norse mythology. An explosion reduces Lara’s mansion to flaming ruin, with her escape from this burning death trap serving as the game’s training stage. Underworld picks up directly after Legend, and starts with a bang. With the game receiving a strong reception from fans and critics, its follow-up Tomb Raider: Underworld has a lot to live up to, and could have been a classic were it not for the same gameplay defects and camera-induced frustration and that has plagued Lara’s outings since day one.
